WOW! I can’t believe I haven’t posted since August; I really need to get better at this!
Over the summer, there have been a number of crashes in Omaha involving pedestrians and cyclists. What is TRULY worrying is the number involving Hit-and-Run motorists. What kind of human animal hits someone “accidentally”; with their two ton plus transportation choice and then drives off as though it didn’t happen?
Over the summer, the city passed a Complete Streets policy that requires the Planning and Public Works departments to consider pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure in new road projects, both new and maintenance/rehab. It’s not clear to me what constitutes “new.” Does it include any project that is already in the preconstruction phase, or only those not yet brought to the table? If the latter, then we won’t start to see potential (it is only a policy, after all) results for several years.
If the injuries and deaths of vulnerable road users demonstrates anything, it is that we cannot wait to provide proper infrastructure and facilities for their safety.
